This was written in the Summer of 03 - All gardens in Ahmeek and Mohawk are in need of donations and volunteers - please call Tammy at 337-0549 or Carol at 337-4706 ------------------------------------ SEED PLANTING - click HERE GARDEN MARKERS - click HERE BEAVER COBBING - click HERE AHMEEK PLANTING - click HERE I've had many breakfasts and snacks this summer in Ahmeek's Gabriel Chopp Park and feasted on the most awesome peas, beans, peppers, lettuce and ate an ear of uncooked sweet corn. All veggies were fresh picked by me. I brushed the dirt off a couple, but didn't have to be concerned about washing them as this is an organic garden - no pesticides... In the mornings, when I was finished with my coffee, my stroll and had my fill of fresh veggies I would leave the garden and stop at the Ramblin' Rose Arts Center in nearby Mohawk to leave a donation for my feast. Had it been a little later in the day I could have walked across the street to Hart's Corner Store and left a donation there - and maybe even found some more veggies in their produce department. The Harts and the Mohawk Superette are letting us place freshly picked veggies, making them available to the community (and visitors). We invite you to do the same. Come see the garden, planted by seed and donated plants. Youth and adults have been busy since early spring. They've tilled the ground. They've planted seeds in the Keweenaw Krayons Greenhouse located behind "The House that is Green" at the Ramblin' Rose Arts Center in Mohawk. They've picked off thousands of bugs and now they are enjoying the "fruits/veggies" of their labor. The garden is only one of many projects undertaken this summer as a result of being awarded the Community pARTners Project Implementation Awards We've painted a mural on the Kermit's Keweenaw Kids bus, we've made clay garden markers, birdhouses and stepping stones. We've painted pots by the dozen... and on Tuesday we'll be working in both Mohawk and Ahmeek. We'll be building two raised beds, creating a beaver habitat and beaver out of "cob" and painting a bear mural on the "old barbershop/new community building" in Mohawk. You are invited to join us in any of these projects. The Beaver Sculpture will feature Artist-in-Residence, Patti Pawlicki assisted by Garden Artist, Michael Powers and will take place (weather permitting) for the next ten days, beginning Tuesday, Aug 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. Wear old clothes as cobbing is messy!!! Audrey Chamberlain will be at the "Old Barbershop/New Community Building" in Mohawk from noon to 6 p.m., beginning Tuesday, Aug 26. You are welcome to join in on the fun and/or watch. Tammy Effinger of Ahmeek has been named Garden Director... please check back often for updates from her and information regarding the award to put sculptures and gardens in Ahmeek and Mohawk Parks and surrounding areas. When you are cleaning out your garages and basements please keep us in mind for rakes, hoes, shovels, wheelbarrows, etc... and when you are thinning your garden please consider bringing us your extra perennials.
